New Diaper Bag

So... I carried around the diaper bag I made a while back for about a week and decided that my worse nightmare was true: it was too big. It was one of those things I knew while I was cutting out all of the fabric and painstakingly sewing all of the pieces together. I kept saying to myself "this sure does seem like a big bag" but rationalizing the size based on a few things: 1. I love big bags, 2. I'm tall and can carry a big bag without a problem, 3. I'm about to have two kiddos who don't carry around their own stuff yet. All are true. What I didn't realize was exactly how difficult it was going to be to carry around a massive (and quite stiff thanks to the peltex) bag, shop for groceries, walk in narrow spaces, or try to store. I switched back to my old bag and contemplated what action to take for a few weeks. It became quite obvious that I just needed to make a new bag. I mean, why not? The baby isn't here yet and I just can't seem to find enough stuff to do (are you reading my sarcasm through the lines?).

I ordered the fabric from hartsfabric.com and as soon as it came in, I got started. I basically cut a few pieces on Monday night, cut the rest and sewed the entire bag with the exception of the handles (until 2am, and I kept saying "what's wrong with me?" while eating a snickers - er, for energy) on Tuesday night, and assembled the handles and the rest of the bag on Wednesday. Not too bad! For some reason I was convinced that if I didn't finish, the baby would come and I'd never have time for sewing, ever again.

I'm quite pleased with the results and can't wait to load it up tomorrow and start carrying it around!

New Bag

Old (New) Bag
How did I not notice this bags massiveness is beyond me, but at least it looks cool. Which is all that matters, right?

I love both bags, but the new fabric is amazing. I love those little Russian dolls.

Perhaps you could use the larger bag for travel- flying/long car rides/etc.

Does the new one have all the storage pockets like the old one?

And that's an amazing fabric site! We don't have any really great fabric stores around here. There are a few Joannes, 1 Hobby Lobby that is 30 miles away and then we do have a local fabric store but they are primarily heavy drape materials and very expensive fabrics for interior decorators to use, since they are being reimbursed for them ;-)

I love the Matryoshka doll fabric! The other one would be good for traveling....you have more stuff with two kiddos now. Or if you were taking all of your cloth diapers somewhere. You are such an amazing seamstress...what a gift!

Well I have carried it around for a few days now and I'm still trying to figure out where to put everything. The pockets are a little different on this bag and the bottom is skinnier. So, the pockets actually stick out a bit too far on the inside of the bag, but oh well. Of course, I could take it apart and fix that, but I'm not feeling that ambitious.
I wish we had a cool fabric store here, but sadly we don't. I think that not enough people our age sew and would keep one in business. It's too bad!
